Kentucky is, in my opinion, the most vastly underrated state in the Midwest. It’s full of rich history and unequivocal beauty. They don’t call it the bluegrass for nothin’! Perfectly aged trees dot the most beautiful green sprawling lawns and southern charm (not to be mistaken for country hick) makes for a warm welcome into the state.

In my travels I often hear the question, “You’re from Kentucky? Do they even wear shoes there?” Oh, ha ha, like I’ve never heard that one before. I’m always quick to correct them - “Oh I’m from Louisville (pronounced Loo-A-VUL not Lewis-ville or Looey-ville) and yes, we wear shoes there - very nice ones in fact.” Did you know that Kentucky was named the most stylish state in America? No really, there’s proof, and Esquire magazine said so! But I digress...

If you’re thinking about visiting Louisville there are some things you won’t want to miss. Here’s my advice on what you must do in my favorite city.

1. The Race for the Roses: Louisville gets a lot of attention one very special day of the year. Derby Day. People from all over the world gather at the twin spires, wearing their very best, drinking mint juleps and betting on their favorite horse. Whether you’re partying like a college student in the infield, or classing it up in the stands and catching glimpses of the high rollers in Millionaires Row, there’s always a good time to be had at Derby. It’s certainly a must for anyone looking for “the most exciting two minutes in sports” and, truth be told, some of the best people watching around.

Tip from the local: If you’re out of state and planning to come to Derby, you’ll have to plan in advance! Hotel rooms sell out quick, and the prices rise pretty quickly, but it’s definitely worth every penny and you won’t be short on excitement. If you’re looking to save a buck, stay right across the river in Indiana.

2. 21c: Dubbed by Conde Nast as the #1 hotel in the nation two years in a row, it’s obvious that 21c is Louisville’s newest hot commodity. Unlike most of the architectural boasts of Louisville, the modern art that decorates the hotel transforms it into a hybrid museum and is certainly edgier than most other local sites. Be sure to check out their fabulous restaurant - Proof on Main - and give this modern place a try!

Tip from the local: Even if you can’t cough up the change to stay here, it’s definitely worth a trip. The art exhibits (always changing) are interactive and pretty wild. No charge to come in and look! Make sure you visit the men’s bathroom (ladies, sneak in and look!) and play with the wall art.

3. Bardstown Road: Looking for an eclectic place to spend an afternoon? You’ll find some of the most diverse and unique eateries and shops on this road that stretches several miles. Perfect for thrifting at vintage stores and getting a unique perspective on the culture of Louisville. Although it holds less “southern charm” and more “hippie grunge” it’s definitely an area you won’t want to skip.

Tip from the local: You MUST visit the Old Fashioned Pie Kitchen (of which there are now many) and get a piece of pie with ice cream. You’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven! Cafe Lou Lou’s - a Louisville favorite - features a huge menu full of the most amazing food you will EVER eat. Really.

4. Cherokee Park: Although I lived in Louisville for most of my life, it wasn’t until I moved back after college that I really enjoyed this park to the fullest. This park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the man who designed the very famous Central Park in New York City. It captures all the beauty of Kentucky in almost 400 acres of land. It features bike paths, running trails, dog parks, a golf course, picnic tables, and large open areas for a myriad of activity. Nature buff or not, this park is a must see! Even if you’re visiting for a short while, it’s worth planning a picnic at this gorgeous spot.

Tip from the local: The houses that line the park are just as lovely and historic as the park itself. If you’re an architecture geek like I am, you’ll enjoy exploring the neighborhoods and beautiful old homes in the area as well. Just drive around a bit and explore!

5. Louisville Science Center: Between field trips as a child, and babysitting duties as a young adult, I’ve been to the Science Center many a time and it NEVER gets old. The exhibits change often and the multi-floor set up offers engaging and educational activities for kids and adults of all ages. Parents and teens won’t get bored - I promise! With an IMAX center, water play station for little ones, and awesome displays and games, there’s always something new to learn and explore.

Tip from the local: The Science Center is right across the street from the Louisville Slugger Bat Museum (another Louisville treasure), so mapping out a day with visits to both will thrill and entertain you. In fact, the area features several museums worth checking out so get ready for a lesson on history, science, sports, or art, depending on your preferences.

Although I no longer reside in Louisville, it holds a dear place in my heart. It will always be the place I call “home” and I take great pride in my city. Nearly everyone who visits boasts of it’s unrecognized beauty and charm and it’s most certainly worth a trip.

Anyone who has lived in Britain for any length of time will understand why the summer holiday is a much-anticipated event each year. It’s June in Edinburgh at the time of writing, and just yesterday I experienced hail, thunder, and warm sun in the space of three hours. I wish I were joking, but the cliché is true; we Brits experience four seasons in one day. The promise of an escape to a more consistent climate may be the only thing that keeps us going.

The recession has been responsible for financially wounding a lot of people, but lack of funds shouldn’t mean staying at home to face the drizzle. With the huge number of budget airlines, flight comparison sites and hotel deal sites, it has never been cheaper or easier to escape the UK. It’s all about finding the right destination first, however; as I discovered this year when a cheap flight to Brussels dropped me in one of the world’s most expensive cities.

The Algarve in Portugal is a great choice for those who are looking for cheap holidays but refuse to compromise on quality. The main destination and party capital is Albufeira, and for those who don’t mind the atmosphere of a tourist resort the Montechoro strip offers inexpensive meals and drinks. It’s still possible to get pints of local beer Superbock for a Euro; far more appetising than Fosters or Tennents. Walking up and down the Strip you will notice Garrafeira shops which are similar to off licenses selling alcohol, mixers and snacks. These shops are particularly notable as you can pick up a bottle of local Port- both red and white- for under five Euro.

For those who prefer rural holidays, the Duas Quintas guest house near Silves has been recommended by both Lonely Planet and the LA Times. Rural Portugal provides gorgeous mountain scenery and trails for walking; far less expensive than a day at the beach with commercial trappings. Going off the beaten track also provides opportunities to visit restaurants which are less expensive than those on the tourist trail; and that’s saying something.

Spain has long been a favourite choice for those travelling on the cheap. Sharing a border with Portugal, Spain is famous for it’s holiday resorts such as Benidorm. Great deals can be found on the Costa Brava, with Barcelona only a short train journey away. Although it may seem counter intuitive, avoid going full board. Although you think you may save money on food and drink in the long run, in my experience the food and drink can be sub-par. In the hotel bar you may be asked to pay a premium for name-branded spirits, whilst food is often left congealing on a buffet table. The Costa Brava is bursting with fantastic ice cream parlours, restaurants, and bars run by British ex-pats all offering a good feed for meagre sums of money.

If you choose to venture into Barcelona, you can save some money and have a great time by visiting the La Bolsa Stock Exchange Bar. The prices of drinks fluctuate on a supply and demand basis; for example if everyone in the bar is drinking vodka and Coke that will shoot up in price, but if you’re savvy and stick to less popular drinks (for example gin and ginger beer) you may find that your rounds are coming in cheap.

The Balearic islands have also dropped in price in recent years, and according to Bloomberg it is now possible for couples to holiday on party island Ibiza for as little as £500. The party spirit of the 90s is still very much alive, with superstar DJ’s Tiesto and David Guetta visiting the island regularly. Ibiza is the perfect place to do some cheap celeb spotting, with Snoop Dogg, Chelsey Davy, and even David Cameron choosing to vacation there.

If you’re feeling brave, why not take advantage of unrest in exotic parts of the world? In 2011 costs to stay at 5 star resorts in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia fell due to the Libyan revolution. Keep an eagle eye on the news and on holiday comparison sites; you may just get lucky.

Old Town Square

The Jewish Quarter

Not far from Old Town Square is Prague’s Jewish Quarter. In the 13th century, the Jewish population in Prague was ordered to move into a confined area that eventually became the Jewish Quarter. Over the next few centuries the Jewish Quarter grew because the Jews were not allowed to build homes anywhere else.

Also known as the Jewish Ghetto or the Josefov, the Jewish Quarter endured a multitude of redevelopments. However, many of the area’s historic buildings eventually received careful preservation, including its six Synagogues.

If you decide to tour the Jewish Quarter, make sure you visit at least the Old-New Synagogue, which is the biggest and most well preserved Synagogue. Other places in the Jewish Quarter worth visiting are the Jewish Town Hall and the Old Jewish Cemetery.

Charles Bridge

Constructed in 1357 under King Charles IV, the Charles Bridge extends over the Vltava River and connects the Old Town Square and the Prague Castle. With a lot of action during the day that includes painters and street performers and a quieter, more romantic scene at night, the Charles Bridge is the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll at any time during the day.

Prague Castle

As the largest medieval castle in Europe, Prague Castle housed many of the country’s kings, making it an important historical location. Restored after World War I, the Prague Castle now holds the seat of the President of the Czech Republic. It comprises of Saint Vitus Cathedral, viewing towers, Golden Lane, a monastery, palaces and museums. Also, try to catch the Changing of the Guards ceremony at the front gate. It happens every hour.

Lesser Town

The Lesser Town, also known as the Lesser Quarter or Mala Strada, is an area that resides at the foothills of the Prague Castle. JERICOACARA is a fishing village with an eco-protected virgin beach in northwest Brazil. As it sits right under the equator, it boasts 320 days of sunshine a year. St Ives is one of the most beautiful places you could hope to visit, in the very heart of Cornwall, England. St Ives offers the visitor many things and sums Cornwall up in just one word 'beautiful'. I have visited this magical Cornish coastal town for over 20 years and never grow tired of its beatific charm. One of the reasons I believe St Ives has remained relatively unchanged during the twenty years I have visited is the road network, traveling from the north there is just one major route to St Ives, in fact most of Cornwall reminds me of a place which has remained isolated from the rest of the UK in some way. This isolation has made Cornwall the perfect holiday destination for tourists of every social class and has holiday ideas to suit every budget.

Whilst in St Ives you can expect to find every type of accommodation there is camp sites with chalets, luxury self-catering cottages and quality hotels most of which provide wonderful views over St Ives or out to sea. Obviously those without views or outside of the main town are cheaper than those smacks in the middle.

The restaurants on the seafront provide fantastic seafood cuisine and value for money, one of my favourite eateries is a restaurant hidden away in the back streets on a road called Fish Street, I highly recommend hunting this restaurant out.

St Ives has a massive arts culture and has attracted artists from the world over, it seems like every third shop is a gallery displaying fine art from around Cornwall and St Ives. The Tate gallery displays not only local but world renowned artists and during the summer is guaranteed to have a seasonal exhibit of interest - it has not failed to impress me yet at least. From the top of the Tate; the cafe provides amazing panoramic views of Porthmeor beach, a good day out in all weather conditions.

Basing yourself here while in Cornwall sets you in good stead to see the rest of Cornwall, you're in close distance to all of the attractions within Cornwall including the Eden Project and the National Maritime Museum, both of which are a short train journey or a drive away.

If you are planning to visit Melbourne and thinking where to stay, Then I would recommend you this best Melbourne Accommodation.

It seemed a handy location between the airport and the city. The apartments were brand new, modern and very clean. We had a huge balcony and flat screen TV. The room had a kitchen, which we didn't really use but it seemed very well equipped. There is a restaurant downstairs that we dined in, they offer a great Stone grill menu and the food was really good..

Yesterday one of my friends from US was asking me how I am enjoying the Rain. I am thinking whether I am really enjoying it or not. I am lucky to be in a place where rain water doesn’t stay for long. But there places in the city where people would not want rain to stay for long. They are definitely not enjoying rain. But for the farmers this is the best time and will definitely be happy with this rain. In pervious posts, I have suggested some good resources where you can get your booking done for your next trip. Here I will suggest some tips before you fly for your vacation.

First of all visit your local library and spend some time in the map. You don’t need to buy a world map at this point of time. Spend some quality time in the library and when you reach the destination of your choice buy local maps. If possible check the local National Geographic office and buy the official topographical maps.

It is also not a bad idea to have a guidebook, but this will come handy when you want to know about the culture, history and safety information of the place. So buy one regional guidebook and keep it at the bottom of your bag. Guidebook is not required for your travel plans but it’s good for knowing local customs, regional history, travel scams etc.
